I have been reading Exodus 6-14 in response to this devotional. One thing that struck me was an instruction by the Lord to Israel. The Lord commanded people in Israel to do a ritual and explain to the children why Israelites kept the ritual. It was to remind everyone how God rescued them from Egypt and Pharaoh.
This is a good practice for modern times. Imagine the power if each family had something they do to remind their kids of how the Lord worked in the parents’ lives. Maybe it can be elaborating on the Christmas tradition. Or, parents may want to give children an explanation of the spiritual circumstances around their marriage each anniversary. Perhaps it could be a meal commemorating when the Lord blessed a family with a certain good job after a season of trial or unemployment.
God puts importance on remembering Him and teaching that to children. It is His wise way of making sure generations do not stray. Think about how we have strayed in America because we do not do things to remember the Lord before our children. We are just beginning to feel the consequences of that.
When we teach of the Lord and what He has done, we are establishing order. Often, people turn to politics for order when a simple explanation of God’s tradition can get the job done.
Application for fathers: Choose one small item in your house that came from a season in life where God showed up. Explain it to your kids.
